This story means the world to our family. My husband was born in Kabul and lived in Afghanistan until 1999. His family fled when the Taliban took over and immigrated to the US. Two years ago we moved to Kansas City/Overland Park. It was about the same time as this book was released. For most people, the only images they knew of Afghanistan were those spread over CNN and other news outlets after 9-11. Those pictures of a war torn, fragile country were not representative of what the country had been like for many years. My husband knew a different Afghanistan. He grew up in Kabul about the same time as Amir and Hassan. The pictures this book painted of “his” Afghanistan really put into words what he had been trying to describe all along: Afghanistan was a wonderful places to live and grow. This book opened the minds of many and was the starter of many conversations were my husband was able to share his own personal stories of Afghanistan. If not for this book, many American’s would still think of Afghanistan as the decimated country it is today. I can’t wait to see the movie and experience the book in pictures.
