As most around me know, how much I loved the Kite Runner. It is not just a simple story of a boy and his family in Afghanistan, but a true depiction of innocence lost, and gained, heartbreak and warmth. A beautifully written story about the effects of war, classism, commitment, immigration and love. While I read this book, I wept, cheered, feared, celebrated and anguished with the family. It reminded me and constantly still reminds me of the beauty of Afghanistan that has been stolen and snatched away (and I don?t just mean the landscape). It is hard to put in words exactly how this book has moved and inspired me, but it confirms my sentiments that we all are individually and collectively responsible for doing everything we possible can to be actively involved in changing life to make things better for all people, especially our children.

Welcome to the Program Board Film and Lecture Committee group. If you have not read The Kite Runner, it is a phenomenal book which has been made into film. “The Kite Runner” spans three decades of Afghan strife and centers on the friendship between Amir, a wealthy Pashtun boy played by Zekiria Ebrahimi, who is now 11, and Hassan, the Hazara son of his father’s servant. In a pivotal scene Hassan, played by Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada, now 13, is raped in an alley by a Pashtun bully. Later, Sohrab, a Hazara boy played by Ali Danish Bakhty Ari, now also 13, is preyed upon by a corrupt Taliban official.

It is a story about friendship, family, personal responsibility, and how we cope with life-altering events.

This story means the world to our family. My husband was born in Kabul and lived in Afghanistan until 1999. His family fled when the Taliban took over and immigrated to the US. Two years ago we moved to Kansas City/Overland Park. It was about the same time as this book was released. For most people, the only images they knew of Afghanistan were those spread over CNN and other news outlets after 9-11. Those pictures of a war torn, fragile country were not representative of what the country had been like for many years. My husband knew a different Afghanistan. He grew up in Kabul about the same time as Amir and Hassan. The pictures this book painted of “his” Afghanistan really put into words what he had been trying to describe all along: Afghanistan was a wonderful places to live and grow. This book opened the minds of many and was the starter of many conversations were my husband was able to share his own personal stories of Afghanistan. If not for this book, many American’s would still think of Afghanistan as the decimated country it is today. I can’t wait to see the movie and experience the book in pictures.
